As much as we hate to admit it, beer garden weather may be over for the year. The season is changing – and that means our beers on offer are as well!
Back again is the seasonal Oktoberfest beer from WEST, brewed to a new recipe each year. This year’s recipe revisits the 2014 Oktoberfest brew, one of our favourites.
Oktoberfest 2016 is once again a traditional Märzen style beer (5.3% ABV). A rich copper coloured lager, it is brewed with Tettnang and Tradition hops. Hints of biscuit and toast flavours and an initial malty sweetness are balanced by a moderate hop bitterness.
Traditionally, Oktoberfest beers are always a ‘Märzen’ style beer, with ‘März’ meaning March in German. This is because these beers were brewed in the spring months, and stored in cool cellars over summer when it was too warm for beer to be brewed. The remaining beer was then consumed during the October festivities in order to clear out the season’s beer before brewing resumed again.
‘Märzen’ beers are a deep amber or copper colour, full bodied with a malty finish, and generally between 5% and 6% ABV as the higher alcohol (as well as hop) content serves as a preservative.
